For successful startups, the ability to generate revenue from sales provides the means to repay investors with a return on their investments.
Until now, equity crowdfunding has been restricted in the USA to very wealthy investors. The Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act of 2012 paved the way for average Americans to participate through small investments. In November of 2015, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) provided specific rules that guide this process. In January of 2016, after a 60-day period of public feedback, it is expected that equity crowdfunding will allow small business to solicit investments from average Americans for the first time.
