Despite widespread use of antidepressants for decades, depression and anxiety are still growing as health concerns. Over the past 30 years, antidepressants have been used increasingly as the first-line treatment for depression and anxiety.
Unfortunately, most patients receive little or no relief from antidepressant treatment. The remainder receive only modest relief after
several weeks. In addition, antidepressant resistance increases with antidepressant use, and antidepressant discontinuation has adverse side effects and exacerbates relapses. Thus, there is an urgent need for alternative therapies.
